Son of former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, Mark E. Ditka, 49, of 679 Central Ave. in Deerfield, was arrested Oct. 7 and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of a controlled substance.
According to Deerfield police, Ditka was stopped for illegal lane use while on Waukegan Road near Central Avenue at 3:42 a.m. Oct. 7. He also was cited for operating an uninsured vehicle, driving while license suspended and illegal lane use.
Police said Ditka was placed under arrested for DUI after the officer conducted a field sobriety test.
He refused to take a breath alcohol test or blood test, police said. The officer searched Ditka’s car and allegedly found an unmarked bottle of pills that was found to be hydrocodone, a controlled substance that requires a doctor’s prescription, police said.
The Lake County State’s Attorney approved the charges. Ditka was taken to the Lake County Courthouse for a hearing at 8 a.m. Oct. 7. Bond was set at $25,000. According to the police report, he was unable to post bond at the time and was taken to the Lake County jail.
His next court date is at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 2.
For the younger Ditka, it is his second DUI. He was charged by Deerfield police with DUI last October. Felony DUI charges against his brother, Michael Ditka, 50, also of Deerfield , were dropped earlier this year after evidence in the case was dismissed.
