Downed wire disrupts power for 1,100 in La Grange and Countryside

LA GRANGE — A downed wire in Countryside resulted in a power outage for 1,100 customers there and in southwest La Grange Tuesday night.
ComEd spokeswoman Martha Swaney said the outage was caused by a wire that fell at 5319 S. Edgewood Ave. about 5:40 p.m. Investigators are determining why it became disconnected, causing a disruption until about 7:20 p.m., Swaney said.
Although one observer saw three flashes of light near 55th Street and Brainard Avenue when the outage began, Swaney said the interruption wasn’t caused by an exploding transformer.
St. Cletus School in La Grange was closed Wednesday as a result of Tuesday night’s outage.
Patients at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital were not impacted because the building has two electric feeds from ComEd. One of those feeds was affected, but hospital power automatically was switched to the active feed, said Ed Gervain, vice president for support services at the hospital.
The main building of the La Grange Country Club, 620 S. Brainard Ave., was not impacted by the power outage; however, electric switches had to be re-set Wednesday morning at the club’s grounds building.

Firefighters from La Grange and the Pleasantview Fire Protection District responded at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a smoking transformer near 55th Street and Brainard Avenue. Power was knocked out to the Jewel Food Store nearby and to several areas of La Grange.
