BURR RIDGE — Mayor Gary Grasso has announced he will step down as mayor effective Monday.
Grasso, who has served as mayor for nearly eight years, said it is his dedication to the village that led him to his decision.
“I don’t want to be any sort of distraction,” said Grasso, who was elected to the DuPage County Board in November and took office this week.
Grasso had intended to hold both positions simultaneously, despite a countywide advisory referendum last month in which voters overwhelmingly spoke out against anyone holding two elected positions.
Several members of the Burr Ridge Village Board spoke out against Grasso’s previous decision to hold both positions. Trustee Robert Sodikoff announced last month that he intended to run against Grasso in the April election.
Grasso plans to make an official announcement at Monday’s Village Board meeting, after which trustees will have to decide who will serve as mayor between now and April.
