LA GRANGE—An investigation is continuing into the cause of a house fire on South Kensington Avenue that claimed the lives of two elderly residents early Saturday.
The names of the man and woman who died were being withheld Monday morning, pending a positive identification, Fire Chief William Bryzgalski said.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office is assisting the investigation, the chief said.
La Grange firefighters responded at 1:38 a.m. Saturday to reports of a home at 901 S. Kensington Ave. with heavy smoke and flames on the front half of the one-and-a-half story structure.
Firefighters found an elderly person in critical condition, who was taken to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, where the person died about 5 a.m.
Crews continued searching and found another elderly person, who already had died, on the first floor.
The fire was upgraded to a third alarm, and crews from more than a dozen departments stayed on the scene until 3:47 a.m. No firefighters were injured.
Bryzgalski said it’s difficult to say how long the fire had been burning before it was visible to neighbors.
“It was going pretty good” by the time the fire department was called, he said.
Editor’s note: The story was updated Dec. 14 to reflect information about the rescue attempts.
