Mundelein woman’s decade-old case nears another trial

Attorneys affirmed Wednesday that they were ready to take a nearly decade-old case to trial Jan. 28 when they were in court for a pretrial hearing before Circuit Judge John Phillips.
Sandra Rogers took a plea deal giving her 30 years in prison for attacking her ex-husband and his new wife when they were asleep in their Lincolnshire home May 19, 2003. Her plea of no contest did not directly admit guilt for the attempted murder charge.
Rogers, formerly of Mundelein, served about seven-and-a-half years of her sentence until her case came back to Lake County. She alleged that the attorney who represented her was ineffective for his failure to investigate a jail corrections officer who allegedly passed messages between Rogers and co-defendant Jonathan McMeekin.
McMeekin is serving a 20-year prison sentence. He pleaded guilty to helping Rogers break into the Lincolnshire residence.
Detectives have met with McMeekin while he is incarcerated after Rogers’ case was brought back to Lake County, Assistant State’s Attorney George Pappas said Wednesday. He asked for an additional status date regarding receiving a report generated from that encounter.
Both he and defense attorney Gillian Gosch said they were prepared to go to trial Jan. 28.
Rogers is in custody at Lake County Jail in lieu of $4 million bond. She is due back in court January 2.
McMeekin, 26, is in custody at Lawrence Correctional Center. His projected parole date is Aug. 20, 2020, according to Illinois Department of Corrections.
