The sixth area bank robbery of the year occurred Dec. 12 at the US Bank in Mundelein near routes 60 and 45.
Mundelein police said that about 11:02 a.m. Dec. 12 they received a call to dispatch for a robbery in progress. The lone offender showed the teller a note demanding money from the cash drawer. He implied he had a gun, but none was shown.
He fled southbound through an adjacent business parking lot with an undisclosed amount of money. At one point, police radioed that he was walking toward the Super 8 motel and then another call saying he was walking toward the Karma restaurant.
The offender was described as a white male, about 5-foot 8-inches tall to 5-foot 10-inches tall, with a slender build. He was wearing a knit cap with a gray coat and faded blue jeans.
The FBI was contacted and a joint investigation is ongoing. Mundelein police encourages anyone with information about the robbery to call 847-968-4600.
The last bank robbery was Nov. 28 in Zion where a man made off with over $200 from the TCF Bank inside the Jewel-Osco at 1400 21st Street. He was not caught.
The first was July 2 in Waukegan at a TCF Bank at the Jewel-Osco at Green Bay Road and Grand Avenue, followed by the same suspect robbing the TCF at the Jewel-Osco at Yorkhouse Road and Lewis Avenue. A Zion man, Larry Williams, was charged in the Lewis Avenue robbery.
In 2011, there were eight bank robberies in Lake County.
Also on Dec. 12, authorities said a Lombard man suspected of committing three Chicago-area bank robberies – including one in Buffalo Grove – was arrested by FBI agents.
Martin Crossley, 37, was taken into custody without incident Dec. 10 at a relative’s home in Lombard. He was subsequently charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Dec. 11 with one count of felony bank robbery.
He is accused of the Nov. 30 robbery of the First Merit Bank branch in Des Plaines.
While not charged, the FBI also alleges Crossley robbed the PNC Bank branch at 1177 Lake-Cook Road in Buffalo Grove on Nov. 19, and a Fifth Third Bank branch in Oak Brook on Nov. 29.~.
