EVANSTON — The occupants of a two-flat brick building at 2111 Emerson St. were evacuated early Monday after fire broke out in the first floor unit, officials said.

The call came in about 1:45 a.m. Firefighters at Station 1, at 1332 Emerson, were on the scene quickly and contained the fire to the first floor unit, Fire Chief Greg Klaiber said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the the living room/dining room area.

There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters.

Klaibler estimated about eight people had to be evacuated from the building, which included a basement unit. He said the Red Cross was called to provide temporary placement. The upper floor unit sustained smoke and water damage and there was some smoke damage to the basement unit, he said.
