VERNON HILLS — Police responded to Century Park at 10:45 a.m. Friday to assist a 66-year-old man who fell into the icy Big Bear Lake.

The man, police said, was carrying fishing equipment and waiting to meet a friend at the lake.

Officer Sharron Joseph reported that the friend arrived after the fall and rallied nearby pedestrians who helped pull him out of the water.

Police said he was able to stand in the water but unable to get out on his own. No injuries were reported.

Police do not know how long he was in the water before being discovered.

The man was not carrying identification and he was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Barrington. Police said they believe he resides in Wheeling.

The Vernon Hills Park District prohibits ice skating and other winter actives on Big Bear Lake, but Joseph said the victim appeared to be fishing from the icy boat dock, which is permitted by the park district.
