Flash mob invades District 128 board meeting

VERNON HILLS — The agenda at a board meeting for Community High School District 128 changed drastically this week, when administrators and attendees were surprised by students performing a song from the musical “Les Miserables.”
The flash mob-style performance was meant as a thank-you to the district for supporting the fine arts at both Vernon Hills and Libertyville High Schools.
Vernon Hills High School’s Fine Arts Supervisor Frank Lestina — who can be seen conducting the musicians in the video — said the idea was born when he got an email from his counterpart at Libertyville High School, Dustin Helvie.
Helvie sent Lestina a video of a flash mob doing a “Les Miserables” song at a wedding. Lestina joked that they should do the same thing with their students.
In true flash mob fashion, only Lestina, Helvie and the students knew about the performance. Everyone was taken by surprise when the music started.
Lestina said the best part was getting students from both high schools to work together. They only rehearsed once, on the night of the board meeting.
Uncertain about how the board would react to an interruption of their meeting, Lestina said it was a relief when they responded positively.
“They were pleased we did it,” he said. “They said it was the highlight of all board meetings.”
