SKOKIE — Skokie Police believe they have the suspect wanted for a string of hair salon robberies in the Chicago area in custody after working with other agencies throughout the Chicago area.
Skokie Police Chief Tony Scarpelli said the suspect was apprehended Monday afternoon, although they are releasing no other details at this time.
“It is still in the early stages of the investigation, and several detectives from many jurisdictions are following up numerous investigative leads,” Skokie police said in a statement released Monday night.
Chicago police confirmed that they were working on the case as well.
“There’s a joint investigation into the armed robberies of salons and we are questioning a person of interest,” Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer confirmed.
The arrest comes just hours after a Great Clips was robbed in the Wicker Park neighborhood, in the 1200 block of North Ashland Avenue about 10:45 a.m., police said.
However, Chicago police would not say Monday night whether today’s robbery is linked to the same serial bandit suspected of several robbing salons in recent months.
Authorities believe the robber has struck multiple times in Chicago, as well in Bensenville, Lombard, Skokie, Niles, Park Ridge, Glen Ellyn and Morton Grove.
Authorities are conferring with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, though police caution the investigation is still in its early stages.
Detectives from Chicago and several suburbs are still working to follow up on “numerous” investigative leads, Skokie police said. More information could be coming soon, Scarpelli said.
