The Jewel-Osco grocery store located at the busy Four Flaggs Shopping Center at 8203 W. Golf Rd. in Niles, will close its doors on April 5.
The company announced on Feb. 6 that two other Jewel-Osco stores will also be closing, including one at 3940 E. 106th St. in Chicago and one in Aurora at 1270 N. Lake St.
The Niles store that is closing had 102 employees and was in business for 39 years. In the village of Niles, there are also Jewel stores at Dempster St. and Greenwood Ave., Oakton St. and Milwaukee Ave. and on Touhy Ave. in Village Crossing.
May said that between the three stores that are closing about 300 employees will have the opportunity to transfer to other Jewel stores.
Karen May, a spokesperson for Jewel-Osco, said that between the three stores that are closing all 300 affected employees will have the opportunity to transfer to other Jewel stores.
“The company is always evaluating store operations,” said May.
“The decision to close any store is difficult, because of the impact on the community,” according to a press release from Jewel-Osco. “However, given, the competitive climate and today’s challenging economic environment, it is essential that Jewel-Osco carefully evaluate its business operations. During that process, the retailer may occasionally find it necessary to close stores that are not meeting company goals or do not fit Jewel-Osco’s current business strategy.”
Village of Niles Community Development Director Chuck Ostman said that he was not sure of the specific amount of cash the store contributed to the village.
“Grocery stores are decent generators for revenue,” said Ostman.
The Chicago store will also close on April 5 and the Aurora location will close on Feb. 15.
