Rain, sleet expected in Chicago; snow piling up in suburbs

Another band of winter weather is expected to move into the area Thursday, and while the city will see mostly rain and sleet, the far north suburbs could see more than 6 inches of snow.
In Chicago, temperatures are expected to only fall into the low 30s Wednesday night and there is a 40 percent chance rain and freezing rain possible before dawn, according to the National Weather Service.
Rain, and possibly some snow or sleet, will continue through the late afternoon Thursday, but no accumulation is expected in the city, the weather service said.
However, the storm could cause significant snow accumulation in the far north and northwestern suburbs.
A winter storm watch will be in effect in Lake and McHenry counties from Thursday morning through Thursday evening, according to the NWS. The watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulation that may impact travel.
In those counties, 6 or more inches of snow and ice accumulation is possible, the weather service said.
Northwest Indiana is also in the path for a mix of snow, sleet and rain, with some areas north of U.S. 6 getting up to 3 inches of lake-effect snow later in the afternoon.
