WESTCHESTER — Westchester police are investigating two recent incidents in which hundreds of gallons of fuel were stolen from a local gas station.
More than 1,400 gallons of gas were stolen from the Shell gas station, 10200 Roosevelt Road, Westchester, after someone tampered with a valve on the pump.
On Jan. 22 or 23, nearly 800 gallons were stolen. A second incident was reported Feb. 4 involving 600 gallons taken between 2:30 a.m. Feb. 2 and 2:30 a.m. Feb. 3.
“Somebody is actually going to the pump and altering the valve,” said Lt. Jeff Mersch.
Numerous cars, apparently aware of the tampering, then file through, filling their tanks, he said.
“It’s not by accident that the pumps are malfunctioning,” he said. “Our investigators are working on it.”~.
