Park Ridge ranked among nation’s safest cities

PARK RIDGE — A geographic research company has ranked the city of Park Ridge among the 100 safest communities in the country.
The Massachusetts-based company Location, Inc., which provides crime data and other information to the real-estate website NeighborhoodScout.com, ranked Park Ridge 72nd among the safest municipalities with populations over 25,000. The top 100 safest cities were identified based on the number of property crimes and violent crimes reported per 1,000 residents in 2011. Crime data that was explored included rates of burglary, theft, homicide, forcible rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, according to the NeighborhoodScout website.
Park Ridge Police Chief Frank Kaminski said the study found that the chance of someone becoming the victim of a violent crime in Park Ridge is one in 1,637.
“At the Police Department we feel this isn’t an award for us. It’s an award for the whole city,” Kaminski said during the Feb. 18 City Council meeting where he presented a plaque to Mayor David Schmidt on behalf of the community.
Kaminski said the award affirms the Police Department’s efforts to implement a community policing strategy through partnerships with residents, business owners and other groups within the city.
Mayor David Schmidt remarked that the award indicates this strategy “is paying off,” and he credited the police officers and community volunteers who assist them, notably the Citizens Patrol.
Other area cities on Location, Inc.’s 100 Safest Cities list included Buffalo Grove (35th), Mundelein (52nd), Mount Prospect (58th), Palatine (68th), and Northbrook (93rd).
