Lake Forest garage collapse caused by accident, not sinkhole

LAKE FOREST — The sinkhole scare that has concerned parts of the country this winter has not hit Lake Forest, at least for now.
A social network picture of a collapsed garage on Stone Gate Road went viral and prompted a rumor that a sinkhole caused the structure to fall.
“There’s no sinkhole in Lake Forest. Somebody had a picture of it and put in on Facebook and it went crazy,” said Susan Banks, Lake Forest’s communications manager.
Construction workers are adding a second garage to the home’s existing garage and digging basements under both, Banks said.
The existing brick garage attached to the home collapsed Sunday morning.
“It was just a construction accident. There were no injuries and the city is working with the homeowners and the builders to get the project resolve,” Banks said Thursday.
Community Development Director Cathy Czerniak described the garage collapse as a “simple misstep in the construction process” during the excavation of the new basement. There was not work being done on the site when the structure collapsed, she said.
The sinkhole scare reached peak frenzy last week when a Missouri man suffered a dislocated shoulder after falling into a sinkhole on an Illinois golf course near St. Louis. A Florida man died in February when a sinkhole swallowed his bedroom. His body has not been recovered and the home has since been demolished.
