Glencoe police investigate swastikas on traffic signs

Updated: May 3, 2011 1:42PM

Glencoe Police are looking into swastikas found spray-painted Saturday on three signs in the village.

"We're investigating right now, and we have to look into it as a possible hate crime," Deputy Police Chief Al Kebby said Tuesday, though he isn't ruling out misguided mischief that may have been perpetrated by kids attending neighborhood parties.

The green swastikas were found at about 12:17 p.m. on two yellow traffic signs at South Avenue and Surfside Place, and at 1:04 p.m. on a stop sign at Valley Road and Skokie Ridge Drive. Damage was estimated at $400.

"We don't know whether this is kid-related, but we're beefing up surveillance in the area," Kebby said. "We're seeing whether we can get some home videos; there are some nearby security systems that are available, and if not, we'll try something else.

"This is not something we have on a regular basis, so we're giving it the attention it requires."
