Two weeks ago, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that 53,364 people in the United States were at least 100 years old in 2010.
On Monday, whatever the current number has increased by one.
That’s because Vivienne Umbderstock has joined the group as she celebrates turning 100 years old.
On Saturday, friends and family celebrated the milestone with Umbderstock at her home at Libertyville Manor. Among the relatives who helped with the party was her grandaughter Janis Gustafson who lives in Oklahoma. Another was Arbutus Swanson of Wauconda, who is Umbderstock’s cousin. Swanson will be joining the 100-year club in another seven years.
Umbderstock did get to show the guests that she still can play the piano as she pounded away on the keyboard.
As for the likelihood of others joining Umbderstock in the 100-year club, according to some statistics, here are the numbers:
■ A person 55 years old today has a 1-in-8 chance of living to 100.
■ A person 20 years old today has almost a 1-in-4 chance of making it to 100.
■ Babies born today have a 1-in-4 chance of living to 100.
