The son of former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka faces a driving under the influence charge.
Michael P. Ditka, was arrested around midnight April 20, according to Rick Wilk, deputy chief of the Deerfield Police Department.
Ditka, a 49-year-old Deerfield resident, was arrested in the parking lot of the Deerfield Township Building, 601 Deerfield Road, not far from his apartment at 625 Deerfield.
An unidentified female passenger was also in the black Hummer, according to police. She told the arresting officer that Ditka had been driving and was in control of the vehicle when the officer arrived. However, Ditka failed field sobriety tests and declined to take a Breathalyzer test, according to police.
Michael P. Ditka has been in legal trouble in the past, pleading guilty in 1998 to a count of battery for pushing his then-girlfriend at his Highland Park home.
Ditka was given a year's probation and ordered to pay a $100 fine, make a $500 contribution to a women's shelter and undergo counseling.
At the time, prosecutors said Ditka acknowledged drinking beer and being upset about a New Orleans Saints football game on television. His father was the Saints coach when the incident occurred.
According to public records, Michael P. Ditka is also the holder of four patents, for concrete and roofing fasteners and an anchoring device.
