Irv Leavitt is our humor writer, winner of the 2009 and 2010 Suburban Newspapers of America awards for best column writing in our category and the 2010 Chicago Headline Club's Peter Lisagor award for best feature writing. He has covered the news of 17 different towns since coming to Pioneer Press in 1989, and currently doubles in brass as our Glencoe reporter.
He previously worked in hotels, a restaurant, a mail-order company, a typesetting plant, as a taxicab driver and dispatcher, in his own retail store, and as a reporter for other newspapers.
He likes to say, "I can operate a Teletype machine, an elevator, a radio-dispatching office and a plug-in switchboard. I can also write clean copy on deadline — yet another obsolete skill."
